Painting Helpful Hints
How do those professional painters make painting look so easy and get it done so fast?

Here are a few tips and tricks the pros use to make the job faster, easier, neater and fun.

Faster
When painting more than one wall, one of the best and least expensive ways to save a lot of time is to use a bucket grid.  This is a flat metal grid which hangs on the inside of an empty 5 gallon bucket. This is used to roll your paint roller on while dipping into the bucket for more paint. Now you can pour, one, two, or even up to four gallons of paint in the bucket at a time, eliminating the timely and messy task of refilling those little paint roller trays.  It also is much less likely to spill when bumped by a foot and can be easily carried from place to place using the handle as apposed to balancing a flimsy paint tray.  You will be surprised how much time and frustration this little tip will save you.

Easier
This is a must!  When painting a whole wall always use an extension pole or at least a good broom handle with metal threads to screw into the back of a standard width 9 inch heavy duty paint roller frame. Why? Well, to get a great looking finish a wall should be painted in consistent strips from the floor to ceiling in long even strips and not patches at the top, middle and bottom of the wall truing to blend them together.  Also, if you have a long sturdy pole that allows you to reach for more paint without stooping and lets you paint from floor to ceiling in on continuous motion you have just save yourself a considerable amount of time and energy

Neater
Having a good paint brush with tapered bristles is the key and if you hold it like a pencil up close to the bristles and rest your palm on the unpainted wall, you will be surprised how easy it is to draw a nice clean straight line just like you would with a pencil.  Painters tape is nice by you must remember that gravity will try to pull paint down and under the tape.  When you tape on horizontal surfaces press the very edge of the tape down hard.  Just before you paint run your finger or a putty knife down the tape edge again. The best advice for a clean paint edge where tape is used is to pretend the tape is not there and carefully brush the paint on next to the tape.  Do not jam the brush onto the tape edge and pile lost of paint where gravity will do its job and pull the paint under the tape.  A light coat that barely touches the tape edge, if at all its best.  You can come in the store and ask for more info and a personal demo on the taping tricks.

Eterior Paint Project Tips

Surface Preparation. This step can make or break your new paint job. Unless your surface is clean, dry, and free of dirt, then your new paint will NOT stick. No matter how expensive or what guarantees it has. It’s as simple as that. You’ll need a heavy scraper for loose paint. A wire brush for old cobwebs and any mildew that may have appeared. Also, borrow, rent or buy a pressure washer and remove all the dirt.

Watch the Weather. Paints need time to cure, and some even need a specified amount of time before they can handle rain. Read the can and look at the long term weather forecast.

Which Paint? It depends on what you’re painting over. Put latex over latex and oil over oil. If not, your paint will peel very quickly. If you’re not sure what your house is currently painted with, use a sheet of sandpaper and rub it on an inconspicuous area of your house. If it balls up, it’s latex. If it gets dusty and chalky, it’s oil.

Brush? Roll? Spray? If you’re painting a house with horizontal siding, use a big 4” brush, this will allow you to work into the crevices. If you’re dealing with a masonry surface like stucco or brick, it would be better to go with a roller in order to fill the natural pits of the surfaces. If you have a sprayer or access to a sprayer, then that will get you the very best coverage. However, when using a sprayer you will still want to use a roller to “backroll”. Spray the surface; go over the whole face with a roller to balance the paint coverage.
